Why did I start Material Culture Club?
I am a cultural historian who researches the significance of household objects in person and in print culture during the long eighteenth century in Britian and the Atlantic World. I have also collected vintage and antiques since childhood, and have taught college classes in history and art history, worked as an appraiser at an auction house, and hit up more thrift stores and estate sales than I can possibly number. When I see objects at a resale shop, on a table at a rummage sale, or in a dusty corner of a garage, I am often amazed at the knowlege that has been lost to time in popular culture or was never taught at all. This is my creative space to share with you the meanings, significance and context of old things in a casual space. Also, I like to write. (Too much! All the time! I fill notebook after notebook no one sees!) I have many ideas about things like antique brandy warmers and the history of drinking culture in England and how it relates to a gendered division of household eminance, or why you should be really selective about any crystal you pick up at an estate sale or how furniture shaped social habits over time. If any of this sounds like your cup of tea, grab one and dive into the historical rabbit hole with me.
